2) Charity
and Goodwill Committees Appointments:
District 1 Director George Retek is
pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara
Hastings and Nick L’Ecuyer to the Goodwill Committee and Claire Desmeules
and Boyd Wells to the Charity Committee.
These appointments recognize the appointees’ great contribution to Bridge in

American Pairs (NAP):
Please make plans this summer to play
in the club qualifying rounds of this prestigious event.

1) District
1 Regionals:
We hope that you will attend our
upcoming 2009 Regionals. They all promise excellent playing conditions
competition, and great hospitality. In
2009 they are:
Quebec City, QC: May 14-18
CanAt (Fredericton, NB): June 30-July 5
CanAm (Montreal, QC): August 10-16
National Capital (Ottawa, ON): October 6-12

2) Grand
National Teams (GNT):
All flights are one day events and the
winners of each event are entitled to represent District 1 at the North
American Final in Washington, DC in July. There is no subsidy by the District.
·
Flight
A (0-5000) and Flight C ( non-LM and 0-500) will be
held on Sunday May 17 (1+7 pm).
·
Superflight
(unlimited) and Flight B (0-2000) will be held on Monday May 18 (10+2:30).
·
If
there are not enough teams to hold a separate event in any flight, the
registered teams will play in the appropriate Swiss Teams that day, and the
highest team for that flight (that paid the extra entry fee of $1 per person)
will be the winner. All players on a
team must be members of District 1.
·

3) District
1 Board Annual Meeting:
The District 1 Annual Meeting will be
held at the Quebec City Regional on Saturday, May 16th. If any District 1
member has an item for the Board Meeting Agenda, please contact Leo Weniger at leowen@primus.ca using subject heading “District Meeting”.

4) Changes
to Laws of Duplicate Bridge:
The laws were changed effective
September 8, 2008. Although there were no major changes, a summary of the
changes can be found on the bottom of the home page of this website.
5) Requirement
to become Life Master:
Effective January 1, 2010, the requirement to achieve Life Master will be
500 masterpoints of which 50 must be gold, 50 red or gold, 75 silver and 75
black. This does not apply to people who
were ACBL members as of Dec. 31, 2009 and maintain continuous ACBL membership
until they become Life Masters. The new rank of Advanced NABC will have
what were the old Life Master masterpoint
requirements.
November 2008
1) Quebec City 400th Anniversary Regional:
This
special ex-quota Regional took place April 10-13. The tournament achieved
its promises. In addition to great bridge and hospitality, there were special events
to honour the birthday of this special historic city. Congratulations to
the organizers and please watch for this terrific city’s next regional in
May 2009.

3) Grand National Teams: The District 1
Finals were held at the Kingston site of the Split Regional on May 18th and
19th.

4) Bridge Week 2008 in Montreal:
District
1 is proud to have been the site of the Canadian Bridge Federation’s
Bridge Championships. Congratulations and thanks to Jean Castonguay, Roger Dunn and their Committee for a well run
event. Three events, Canadian National Teams Championships (CNTC),
Canadian Women’s Team Championships (CWTC), and Canadian Seniors Team
Championships (CSTC) crowned national champions who will represent Canada in
the World Mind Games in China in the Fall.
District
1 winners were:
· CNTC:
Nicolas L’Ecuyer, Marc-Andre Fourcaudot,
Kamel Fergami, and Vincent Demuy along with Robert Lebi and
Dan Jacob.
· CWTC:
Pamela Nisbet, Martine Lacroix
and Pascale Gaudreault along
with Karen Cumpstone, Kismut
Fung and Susan Culham.
· CSTC:
Steve Brown, Bill Bowman, John Bowman, Ed Zaluski and
Jurek Czyzowicz.

to all, and we’re sure you will represent Canada well in China.

CNTC B, Canadian Open Pairs Championships and Canadian IMP Pairs Championships

5) ACBL President to Visit District 1:
We
are very pleased that ACBL President, Dan Morse will be attending the
CanAm in Montreal in August. We look forward to welcoming the head of our
organization and meeting this former World Champion at the table.
6) District 1 Players Achievements at 2007
World Championships in Shanghai.
Congratulations to:
Sylvia
Caley, Julie Fajgelzon,
Pamela Nisbet, Isabelle Smith, Francine Cimon who with Linda Lee (Toronto-who filled in at the
last minute) and Ray Lee (NPC) finished 7th in the Round Robin and lost to
Germany in the quarter finals of the Venice Cup.
Joe
Silver, Boris Baran, Fred Hoffer
and Don Piafsky who, along with Arno
Hobart, John Carruthers and Daniel Korbel
(NPC), all of Toronto, won the Round Robin and lost a close Quarter Final
match to Brazil in the Senior Bowl.
Waldemir Frukacz, John Zaluski, Jeff
Smith, Nick L’Ecuyer, Kamel
Fergami, along with Piotr Klimowicz (Edmonton) and Nader
Hanna (NPC) of Toronto represented Canada well in the Bermuda Bowl.

7) 2008 District 1 Goodwill and Charity
Committee Appointments:
District

Macnab (Halifax) and Fred Hoffer (Montreal) to the
ACBL Charity Committee, and Pierre Hamelin (Quebec
City) to the ACBL Goodwill Committee.
These honourary appointments recognize the

8) District 1 Board Annual Meeting:

meeting to be held at the CanAm Regional in Montreal on Saturday, August 16th

10) Changes to CBF’S Bridge Week:
At
its board meeting in May the CBF made the following changes to Bridge Week
starting in 2009:
a) Name
changed from Canada Bridge Week to Canadian Bridge Championships ( CBC )
b) Eliminated
Zone Finals in the CNTC-A, CNTC-B, CWTC, but retained club qualification
requirement in first two events.
c) Any
team may participate in the CBC provided they submitted their team entry and non-refundable
round robin entry fee (CNTC-A $920; CNTC-B $540; CWTC $740) to Jan Anderson by
March 15, 2009. Team roster changes will be allowed until May 1, 2009.

1) DISTRICT 1 ESTABLISHES WEBSITE:
By the end of September,
this website will be in operation. We will try to make it as bilingual as
possible. We hope to make it a “1 stop
shopping centre” for bridge information in the District. There will be district wide masterpoint race
information and information about achievements by our members. You can find out about what our District is
and how it works. Our District
Director’s Report (after each NABC) will inform you about the decisions of the
ACBL Board of Directors. We hope you
enjoy the website and visit it often.

2) QUEBEC CITY APPROVED FOR
EXTRA REGIONAL IN MAY 2008.
In a rare decision, the ACBL
Board has approved an ex-quota Regional for Quebec City in honour of the City’s
400th Anniversary. Congratulations to the City’s Committee and our District
Director, George Retek, for getting this passed. Please mark your calendar on April 10-13 for
this special tournament which will be part of the city’s celebrations.
3) DISTRICT 1 PLAYERS
TO REPRESENT CANADA AT WORLDS IN CHINA.
The following District 1
players will be on the Canadian teams in the following events in Shanghai Sept.
28- Oct 13.

Fergami. Venice Cup (Women): Sylvia Caley, Julie Fajgelzon, Pamela Nisbet, Isabelle Smith, Francine Cimon
and Rhoda Habert.

Senior Bowl: Joe Silver, Boris Baran, Fred Hoffer and Don Piafsky
All these players had to defeat
tough competition at Bridge Week, and the Bermuda Bowl team had to defeat
Mexico, for the right to go to the Worlds.

4) EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES BY
MARITIMERS AT NASHVILLE NABC.
Congratulations to Karl
Hicks and Brian Alexander, who pulled off an unprecedented sweep of the 0-5000 Life
Masters Pairs and the 0-5000 mini-Spingold (with Mike Betts and honourary Maritimer, Jim Gordon). And Mike and Jim were tied with Karl and
Brian going into the last round of the Pairs event! Quite a performance in these two gruelling
events!.
